Our Martial Art - Han Mu Do
At the urging of Do Ju Nim Ji Han Jae, founder of Hapkido, and Kuk Sa Nim In Hyuk Suh, founder of Kuk Sool Won, Grandmaster Kimm officially founded Han Mu Do in 1989. As of January 2000, Do Ju Nim Ji bestowed the title of "Do Ju" (which means founder) upon Grandmaster Kimm.
After 40 years of study, Grandmaster Kimm felt that each of the various styles he had studied had something to offer. However, he also found that most martial arts were teaching techniques that were developed during the earlier part of the 20th century and were no longer as effective because of changes in fighting styles. With this in mind, Grandmaster Kimm set out to organize a martial art that would combine the best elements of several traditional Korean martial arts into one style that would be more suited to current fighting styles.
Han Mu Do training is divided into four separate categories. Each of these categories of techniques are emphasized in order to develop the best, most well-rounded, martial artist possible. The four categories are:
- · Yuh Kwon Sul - these are the empty hand techniques. It is from this category that the student will learn the necessary kicking, punching, joint-locking, and throwing techniques that will provide the student with basic self-defense skills.
- · Mu Ki Sul - these are the weapons techniques. From this category, the student will learn how to use weapons such as the traditional Korean sword, the cane, the fan, and the belt to subdue an attacker.
- · Ki Su Ryun - these are the ki developing techniques. Through the practice of these drills a student may learn positive attributes such as increased health and mastery over one's own body.
- · Han Chul Hak - this is the study of Korean philosophy. Through the study of this a student can develop not only physical self-defense skills, but also the ability to logically analyze information and gain a better understanding of the materials on their own.

Many people who have seen Han Mu Do demonstrated compare the art to Hapkido. However, this is not a completely accurate comparison. Han Mu Do was organized to balance both the physical and mental training a student would need to succeed in not only the martial arts but in life as well. Dr. Kimm stresses the continuation of academic study of both Korean philosophy, as well as other academic disciplines. Additionally, Han Mu Do's organization and inclusion of Hyungs (pre-arranged forms) to assist students in learning the techniques, separates the art from Hapkido. For these reasons, while the techniques of Han Mu Do may be similar to Hapkido, Han Mu Do and Hapkido are two separate martial arts - perhaps related but with separate identities.
